Dr. David Hayes-Bautista is an honored member of our Distinguished Speakers Platform. He is a Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the David Geffen School of Medicine, UCLA. He graduated from UC Berkeley in 1970 when there were only 25 Latinos on the entire campus. He completed his MA and PhD in Medical Sociology at the University of California Medical Center, San Francisco.
Dr. Hayes-Bautista's research focuses on the dynamics and processes of the health of the Latino population using both quantitative data sets and qualitative observations. The Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture combines these research interests with teaching of medical students, residents and practicing providers to manage the care of a Latino patient base effectively, efficiently and economically.
Widely cited in the health care industry, his research on the Latino Epidemiological Paradox led him to find links between culture, behavior, and health. This, in turn inspired him to research the emergence of Latino society in California during the Spanish colonial, Mexican Republic and U.S. statehood periods. A portion of his research will appear in his forthcoming book, El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition.
Speaker David Hayes-Bautista is also the celebrated author of La Nueva California: Latinos in the Golden State; Healing Latinos: Fantasía y Realidad; No Longer a Minority: Latino Social Participation in California, and The Burden of Support: Young Latinos in an Aging Society.
The release of his most recent and highly anticipated book, El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition, in March, 2012, will coincide with the 150th anniversary of the historical battle of this name, a work certain to bring a new perspective and valuable cultural knowledge to marketing and diversity circles. Dr. Dr. Hayes-Bautista has also worked in Mexico in collaboration with the National University (UNAM) and Universidad de Guadalajara. He has been invited to meet with every Mexican President since Luis Echeverria in the 1970’s and has been their guest at annual Cinco de Mayo celebrations in Puebla ever since.

PROGRAMS BY DR. DAVID HAYES-BAUTISTA
La Nueva California: Latinos in the Golden State
Since late 2001 more than 50% of the babies born in California have been Latino. When these babies reach adulthood, they will, by sheer force of numbers, influence the course of the Golden State. In this keynote, Dr. David Hayes-Bautista shares the insights from his essential research. In this vibrant, high energy keynote, he paints a vivid and energetic portrait of Latino society in California by providing a wealth of details about work ethic, family strengths, and business establishments. A must for health care professionals, this program by Dr. Hayes-Bautista describes the surprisingly robust health profile that yields an average life expectancy for Latinos five years longer than that of the general population.
Audiences who work with multicultural and Hispanic populations as well diversity initiatives and political campaigns will benefit from this complex, fascinating analysis that suggests that the future of Latinos in California will be neither complete assimilation nor unyielding separatism. Instead, the development of a distinctive regional identity will be based on Latino definitions of what it means to be American.
What leaders are saying about La Nueva California: Latinos in the Golden State
Hayes-Bautista has long argued that Latinos in the United States, generally, and Mexican Americans, specifically, are members of a civil society—and not some dysfunctional minority group, as commonly imagined. As Americans lately have discovered America within the Americas, Hayes-Bautista now gives us an excellent guide to the nation's future, by describing the new possibility of California--the largest Hispanic state in the union."—Richard Rodriguez, author of Brown: The Last Discovery of America
"For more than two decades, Hayes-Bautista has been on the forefront of social scientists researching the developing Latino identity of California. The cumulative result is La Nueva California, a tour de force of social science, enlivened by convincing detail, historical imagination, prophetic power, and—above all else—great hope."—Kevin Starr, author of Americans and the California Dream series
"For more than a decade, David Hayes-Bautista has accurately charted the trajectory of the New California. He is the best qualified scholar to explain the pattern of Latino growth in California and its importance for California as a whole. His analysis is persuasive and sets forth constructive initiatives to allow the Latino presence in California to be a positive force for sustaining California as a state of opportunity and achievement."—Henry Cisneros, Chairman and CEO, American CityVista
El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition
Why is Cinco de Mayo—a holiday commemorating a Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862—so widely celebrated in California and across the United States, when it is scarcely observed in Mexico?
As David E. Hayes-Bautista explains, the holiday is not Mexican at all, but rather an American one, created by Latinos in California during the mid-nineteenth century. Hayes-Bautista shows how the meaning of Cinco de Mayo has shifted over time—it embodied immigrant nostalgia in the 1930s, U.S. patriotism during World War II, Chicano Power in the 1960s and 1970s, and commercial intentions in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, it continues to reflect the aspirations of a community that is engaged, empowered, and expanding.
This keynote offers new insights from social scholar, Dr. David Hayes-Bautista, and will engage audiences and greatly enhance diversity gatherings, cultural meetings, education and teacher conferences, and Latino organization events as well as Hispanic Heritage events.
NOTE: The book, El Cinco de Mayo: An American Tradition, will be released in March, 2012, marking the 150th anniversary of Cinco de Mayo. We highly recommend you book your date on the Dr. Hayes-Bautista's Cinco de Mayo Speaker Tour as early as possible. Click here to book your event today!

“David Hayes-Bautista’s fascinating study finds new sources that illuminate the California roots of Cinco de Mayo celebrations. But more than just uncovering the holiday’s true origins, El Cinco de Mayo offers a striking interpretation of the making of a Mexican-American culture in Civil War-Era North America.”—Stephen Aron, author of American Confluence: The Missouri Frontier from Borderland to Border State.
“In this well-written and thoroughly-researched study, Hayes-Bautista reminds us that Cinco de Mayo is not really a Mexican holiday, but rather a celebration created in California during the American Civil War by native-born Latinos and immigrants from Mexico and Latin America. Hayes-Bautista has reconstructed the rich social and political world of these California Latinos in painstaking detail, and his analysis of their widespread political engagement reveals an activism hitherto not fully recognized. This is an original and revealing book that changes the way we think about nineteenth century California.”—Richard Griswold del Castillo, author of The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo: A Legacy of Conflict.
